Solar Water Heating Gains Ground with Homeowners
Monday, April 27th, 2009Florida Keeping Pace with New Solar Water Heating Incentive Program
Friday, April 17th, 2009Gulf Power Company customers are slowly but surely warming up to the idea of heating their water with the sun, thanks to incentives from Gulf Power and the state of Florida, as well as a 30 percent federal tax credit….
The Virgin Islands Look to Solar Hot Water
Thursday, April 16th, 2009A comprehensive energy bill that appropriates $30M in renewable energy investments in the Virgin Islands passes a senate panel committee unanimously. The bill will be up for a final vote in two months. Efforts are being made to appropriate as much as $20M of the funds specifically for solar water heating investments.
Says Sen. Louis Hill, the bill’s author, “This is an opportunity to use the stimulus money in a very focused manner to give us the best bang for our dollar,” he said. “We have to decide what is the best way, and how do we get the biggest effect. I propose we focus on solar water heating; it’s an area where we can make a serious and significant impact in a short period of time.” Here is the link: http://www.onepaper.com/stthomasvi/?v=d&i=&s=News:Local&p=1223617408
Solar Water Heating Up in Ohio
Friday, April 10th, 2009Using $240,000 in funds from a settlement between The Sierra Club and Dayton Light and Power over violations of the Clean Air Act, the environmental advocacy group Green Energy Ohio is looking to spur installations of the most environmentally-impactful home energy investment available, Solar Water Heaters.
They know, as more and more are finding out, that investing in Solar Hot Water is the single best place to invest money as we begin to build the CleanTech Economy of the future.

SUN+WATER=HOT WATER
Thursday, April 2nd, 2009While the majority of energy solutions considered today involve somewhat advanced technological approaches (photovoltaic cells for solar power, harnessing the wind and waves with elaborate systems to generate electricity, etc.), it’s a wonder that the simplest of ideas is so often overlooked. Though it is obviously important to continue to develop these other great technologies, the cost of many of them is still prohibitive for many in both developed and developing countries. Though most Mediterranean countries and many others use solar hot water as the standard, most places still use natural gas and electricity, often while debating the benefits of developing technologies that are years away from the market. They also often ignore or are unaware of the fact that the mundane process of heating water can now be carried out using direct heat from the sun instead of natural gas combustion or some other process that involves a wasteful conversion of energy. Heating water is very energy intensive, and meanwhile one very abundant source of energy does it very well…at a considerably lower cost.
As we confront issues of sustainability and energy use in the midst of a global downturn, it is important to remember that value should be the guiding principal. To be able to do the most with what we have is the key to most of the issues we face in our daily lives, and it is important to maintain this same focus when dealing with the large, complex issues we face. The way we heat our water might not be the most exciting thing to consider while waiting for the hydrogen car, but the fact is that in California, we can offset the carbon emissions of over 3.6 million vehicles if half of us used a solar water heater. Now that the government has caught on to this fact, solar hot water is very affordable, meaning that we can start offsetting the carbon emissions of millions of cars just by shifting to solar water!!!!
