Solar water heating uses the sun's free energy to heat the water in your home.
A: The sun heats a solar fluid in the panels mounted on your roof. The fluid gets hot and flows down to a solar tank (C).
B: A sensor detects that the panels are hot and regulates the flow of solar fluid through the system.
C: The fluid heats water in the tank through a heat exchanger.
D: The hot water from the solar tank flows into your existing tank. Since the water is already hot, the gas heater only needs to function about 20% of the time, saving you the money you would have spent on natural gas or electricity.
A recent study sponsored by PG&E found that solar water heating can save more natural gas than any other home improvement.
